Sa Templo

SA TEMPLO
Para kay Ani Rosa Almario

Bayaang maglaro sa gubat ang musmos,
Bayaang maligaw.
Bayaang maglaro ng apoy ang musmos,
Bayaang mapaso.
Bayaang umakyat sa duklay ang musmos,
Bayaang mahulog.
Bayaang lumusong sa putik ang musmos,
Bayaang bumaho.

Bayaang tumawa maghapon ang musmos,
Maikli ang araw.
Bayaang pumitas ng bituin ang musmos,
Maikli ang gabi.
Bayaang tumawid ng dagat ang musmos,
Maliit ang lupa.
Bayaang humalik sa langit ang musmos,
Maliit ang pisngi.

Huwag ipipiit ang mata ng musmos,
Anak ng pighati.
Kung lumaki’y hubad sa bait, busabos,
Sa mithing dakila.
Huwag susugatan ang puso ng musmos,
Kung baga sa ubas,
Kahit na magbunga at bunga’y mahinog:
Maasim, madagta.

Bayaang maglaro mag-isa ang musmos.
Sa kanya ang mundo.
Bago s’ya hutukin ng sanlibong bagyo.

AT THE TEMPLE
For Ani Rosa Almario

Let the child play in the woods,
Let her lose her way.
Let the child play with fire.
Let her burn.
Let the child climb up branches,
Let her fall.
Let her play in the mud,
Let her stink.

Let the child laugh all day,
The day is short.
Let the child reach for the stars,
The night is short.
Let the child cross the sea,
The earth is small.
Let the child kiss the sky,
The cheek is small.

Don’t imprison a child’s eyes.
Child of sorrow.
She grows up naked and unwise,
Poor in purpose.
Don’t wound a child’s heart.
Like grapes,
It will bear fruit and ripen,
But of sour vintage.

Let the child play by herself.
The world is hers.
Before a thousand storms bend her.
